2001-2002 campaign

The main objectives of the 2001-2002 campaign at Dome C were:
  • the continuation of the deep drilling core activity (EPICA);
  • the continuation of the glaciology activity (EPICA);
  • the continuation of the installation of the Concordia Station;
  • the execution of Concordia scientific programmes (i.e. glaciology, seismology, astrophysics, etc.).
ACTIVITIES
Logistic activities

The Camp was opened 84 days from November 15th to February 6th with the following activities:
  • start-up of: electrical power station, HF and Satellite stations, dormitory tents and night area in the main building, kitchen, vehicles, snow melter and meteorological station;
  • maintenance of the runway and snow cleaning in the Camp Area;
  • keeping camp in operation (radio-telecommunications, kitchen, continuous vehicles maintenance, landing strip maintenance and T/O assistance, waste management, ...);
  • supporting Epica and Concordia scientific activities;
  • resuming building operation at the Concordia permanent station;
  • completing the installation of a cable network connecting all camp buildings to each other;
  • installing of a second HF antenna;
  • installing 1Kw Motorola amplifier;
  • installing a IRIDIUM telephone station.

All heavy materials for the new installations were transported by three tractor-train trips with materials for the functioning of the camp and the carrying out of the scientific activities (drilling, astrophysics, seismology, snow sampling, etc.). The total pay load transported in Dome C Camp was around 460 tons.

Concordia scientific activities
6 different groups of scientists worked during this campaign:
-Micrometeorite;
-Astrophysics;
-Geomagnetism;
-Physics of the Atmosphere;
-Radar Survey;
-Seismic permanent observatory.

EPICA activities

The drilling team reached a depth of perforation in ice of 2,871.81 m which corresponds to around 530,000 years ago;
the scientific team reached a depth of ice-core analysis of 2,162.05 m.

The construction of the permanent base

The Italian and French technicians have completed the assembling of the external wall panels of the first tower.
