2000-2001 campaign Campaign report (from page 136 to page 164) Concordia Station: objective attained The carpentry of the Concordia winter Station is finished with the tightening of the bolts and the assembling of the roof of both two buildings.
EPICA, record of depth: 1,459 m The 2000-2001 EPICA-Dome C perforation campaign, ended on January 31st 2001 with success, reached a depth of perforation in the ice of 1,459 m. In just one season around 1,330 m of ice were pierced, which is among the highest ever achieved, considering the brief duration of the operations in Antarctica (2.5 months). This perforation, which up to now has been the third deepest in Oriental Antarctic, will continue in the next season, during which will be carried out the analysis of the ice core pulled out. With the depth reached in this season, we now have ice that dates back to around 100,000 years ago. With the success achieved this year from the EPICA-Dome C perforation, the European research and the Italian contribution too have attained a remarkable success, which is at the avant-garde in this sector of research.
